What to Do When Feeling Spiritually Dry: 10 Ways to Reconnect with God
At some point in every Christian’s walk, we will experience spiritual dryness. It's part of the journey. The Bible frequently speaks about the choice to have faith—because it is a decision. When life gets tough, and we feel distant from God, it’s easy to doubt and lose heart. But even in those moments, we’re called to persevere. The Bible reminds us that God is always with us, even when we don’t feel Him.
So, what should you do when feeling spiritually dry? Here are some practical steps that have helped me rekindle my faith and feel God near:
1. Confess Exactly What You Feel
Being honest with God is key during spiritual dryness. Take time to confess exactly what you're feeling and share your thoughts with Him. Prayer is a space where you can cry out and be vulnerable, allowing God to speak into your heart.
2. Worship and Praise
Worship can be transformative during dry seasons. Sing songs of devotion and praise, and let the music draw your heart closer to God. Worshipping Him with sincerity and focus can help shift your perspective and reawaken the joy of His presence.
3. Remember He’s Still There, Even When You Don’t Feel Him
It's common to feel distant from God, but that doesn't mean He’s abandoned you. If you're struggling to focus on the Word or feeling disconnected, remember that God is still there—even when you don't feel His presence. Trust that He is at work in you, even in the stillness.
4. Get Outside in Nature
Sometimes, the distractions of life—like curated Pinterest-perfect homes—can pull us away from the simplicity and beauty of God’s creation. Spend time in nature—a walk on the beach, through a forest, or on a hike—and let the peace of the natural world help you reconnect with your Creator.
5. Read a Testimony of Someone Else’s Journey
Reading about how God has worked in someone else’s life can inspire you. Testimonies remind us of God’s greatness and encourage us to trust in His ability to transform lives. When we hear how He’s been faithful to others, it reminds us that He is still at work.
6. Remember: God is FOR You
Above all, remember that God is for you. He loves you, He pursues you, and He adores you more than you can fathom. Even in the moments of dryness, His heart is for you. Don't forget that truth.
Other Practices to Help You Reconnect with God During Dry Seasons
Spend Time in Silence and Solitude
Sometimes, solitude is necessary for hearing God’s voice. Jesus often withdrew to pray alone (Luke 5:16), and He invites us to do the same. Take time away from distractions and simply sit in His presence.Practice Gratitude
A thankful heart helps us refocus. Take a moment each day to list things you’re grateful for. Psalm 103:2 says, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits.”Serve Others
Serving others shifts the focus away from ourselves and onto the needs of others. Acts 20:35 reminds us, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Serving can help reignite your sense of purpose.Fast and Pray
Fasting is a powerful spiritual discipline. When you fast, you are denying the flesh to focus more on God. Jesus fasted and prayed, and He invites us to follow His example (Matthew 4:1-2).Seek Fellowship with Other Believers
Community is essential, especially in dry seasons. Hebrews 10:24-25 encourages believers not to neglect meeting together but to encourage one another.Meditate on Scripture
Even when it’s hard to focus, let God’s Word be your anchor. Meditating on a verse or passage can bring clarity and peace in times of spiritual dryness. Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”Reflect on God’s Faithfulness
When feeling dry, reflect on God’s past faithfulness. Remind yourself of the times He has answered prayers, provided, and guided you. His promises never fail.Read Uplifting Christian Books or Listen to Sermons
Reading a Christian book or listening to a sermon can reignite your passion for God. Find resources that speak truth and life into your spirit.Journal Your Thoughts and Prayers
Writing can be a powerful way to process your emotions and track God’s work in your life. Journaling helps you see how God is moving and helps you stay focused on His goodness.Remember That God is Patient
God is patient and will renew your strength in His time. Isaiah 40:29 reminds us, “He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might He increases strength.” Trust in His timing.
In times of dryness, we need to draw near to Him and trust His plan. Just as He leads us beside still waters, He offers us peace and rest, even in the hardest seasons. Trust that He’s guiding you, even when it feels like you're walking through the wilderness.
Remember this is not permanent. God is always with you, and He will never leave you nor forsake you (Deuteronomy 31:6). During these times, remember that spiritual growth often happens in the quiet moments. Stay persistent, lean into His Word, and trust that God is working in you, even when you don’t feel His presence.
God is always with you.
